MADISON, Wis. — For the first time in 20 years the pay gap has widened. 9to5 issued the following statement in response:
“As we battle the persistent and widening pay gap, it is crucial to acknowledge that any loss in wages impacts the lives of women of color more deeply. Women of color already navigate systemic inequities that exacerbate financial challenges, making it essential that we prioritize our economic security and well-being.
“Legislation like the Paycheck Fairness Act is a vital step toward achieving pay equity. However, closing the pay gap requires a comprehensive approach that encompasses additional critical reforms. We must advocate for policies that provide paid leave, affordable childcare, and meaningful and enforceable protections against workplace harassment. Just as important, reproductive freedom is essential to ensure that women of color have the autonomy and resources needed to make decisions about our lives and careers.
We urge lawmakers across the nation to follow Colorado’s lead, where the state 9to5 chapter worked in coalition to pass an equal pay law. This groundbreaking legislation, which is already leading the nation in closing the pay gap, serves as a powerful model for addressing wage disparities and advancing equity for all women.
To truly support women of color in overcoming economic disparities, we must work collectively to change both the law and the culture of oppression. Together, we can create a more equitable future where all women and people can thrive in the workplace and beyond.
